While he introduces new research, much of it will be familiar to anyone who has studied developmental psychology in the past 20 years. Thus, in the area of attachment theory, luminaries like John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth receive due attention, as does Jay Belsky, who has revised his position on the deleterious effects of day care on children's development. Sclafani deals comprehensively with fundamental parenting issues such as development, family systems, fatherhood, parental modeling, discipline, divorce, education, day care, and stress. Retaining both content and clarity, he explains child psychology in a manner accessible to lay readers.
