math problem solving

Pass out worksheets with math word problems for students to solve.

These can become very tedious, there is no recognition for work, and typically only one problem solving method is used.

Take one math problem related to what you are studying. Ask the students to solve the problem by drawing or writing as many ways to solve it as possible. See who comes up with the most. Circulate as students work and spark ideas among the class. Have students share their solutions with a partner. Have 3 students with varying approaches come present their solutions using the board.

Students learn to tackle one problem with a variety of methods. They learn to truly understand the nature of the problem. They get recognition from partners and presentation practice if they are chosen to present to the class.
