Read the science text and answer the even numbered questions in class and the odd numbered questions at home, leading up to a chapter test.

These texts are not written by scientists. The children are not given a chance to pursue real curiosities.

Before teaching your unit, choose an important concept, and 10 facts that are important to know about the topic.

  1. Find out what the students know and wonder about the topic. Have students look through books and videos to learn more.
  2. Using materials related to the topic, have students design experiments to learn more. Have them write, what I did, notice, why it is like that, and am I sure.
  3. Do more research to try to learn the questions from lesson one.
  4. Teach the essential concept. Tell the students they will need to re-teach it to a younger class with an interesting presentation: skit, poster, book, game show etc.
  5. Go over the facts from the unit. Have the students create a multiple choice question for each fact.
  6. Pick an object related to your unit topic and have the children complete the following, illustrate and share with the class — A _____________________ is like _______________________because___________________.
  7. Using materials related to the topic, have students design experiments to learn more. Have them write, what I did, notice, why it is like that, and am I sure.  Have a peer edit this write-up for a grade.
  8. Pulling the best of the questions, give the students a unit test.
